MdAA took advantage of a range of professional opportunities to further explore the concept of the accommodation unit, particularly in the evolving field of hospitality design.
In this case, the opportunity arose when a client who had acquired a prestigious residential property for his family, also secured a small flat in the same building, which was intended to be renovated as guest accommodation.
The flat, a modest 37-square-meter former council apartment, had remained largely untouched since the 1960s. It featured a traditional layout of compact rooms—bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen—lit only by two windows facing the square. The client’s vision was to transform it into a luxurious, high-end space.
The design concept centres on integrating the two windows into a single, cohesive open-plan area, spanning the entire 8-meter façade wall overlooking the square. This space would include the living area and, towards the rear, the sleeping area, with the two zones separated by an elegant, semi-transparent sliding partition made of vertical wooden slats.
The service areas—bathroom, entrance, and kitchenette—are positioned along the opposite, windowless side of the flat.
The elegance of the materials plays a crucial role in elevating the overall quality of the space: a palladiana flooring made from black Sahara Noir marble, a sloped ceiling finished in gold leaf, reflecting light into the room, sliding wall of brass-finished elm slats, a backlit stratified glass shelf lining the wall facing the square, and carefully selected curtain fabrics, all contribute to the flat’s sophisticated ambiance.
