Casale
Migliara

This large, noble agricultural estate from the 18th century, originally belonging to the Maggi-Diligenti family, is located in the hills near Cortona, in the Manzano area.

Once a newly reclaimed region, emerging from the marshlands where local nobility would take residence, the estate comprised several 18th-century buildings. Among these were the barn, largely preserved, with its façade opening onto a broad rectangular courtyard surrounded by various outbuildings, likely factories; the grand Villa, also dating back to the 18th century but renovated in the 1950s, set within a two-hectare park designed by a local landscape architect in the 1930s; and finally, three substantial farms’ houses within approximately 100 hectares of agricultural land.

Casale Migliara, named after the Roman “Miglio” (mile) from the straight stretch of provincial road below, is the highest of the estate’s farmhouses, situated near the “Migliara” cru, the nearby estate’s finest wine selection.

The farmhouse itself reflects the typical structure of rural farmhouses, spread across two floors with a total area of approximately 500 square metres. The ground floor is characterized by brick sail vaults that ceiling all the rooms, arranged in the front and rear areas, with the central load-bearing wall forming the axis that supports the pavilion roof. The keystone of one of these vaults is stamped with the construction date, 1873. The first floor was covered by a large wooden roof.

During the period between the two World Wars, a new large roofed section, designed as animal stables, was added to the right side of the original building. Perpendicular to the main volume of the farmhouse, this extension is significantly longer than the width between the two façades and extends visibly beyond the rear of the building.

A strong system of masonry arches supports the ceiling above the stable. Today, the former stable area, approximately 140 square metres, has been converted into a spacious living area, with the dining room and kitchen located at the far end, opposite the main façade, opening onto a large wooden terrace adjacent to the swimming pool.

The floors are laid with herringbone brick tiles, featuring underfloor radiant heating panels. The perimeter walls and roof have been thermally insulated, and a photovoltaic system has been installed to generate electricity.
